The Reformed Church of Fort Plain History

Current Day Building – Est. 1888

Current Day

The current large brick building was dedicated on July 8, 1888 and completely renovated in 1926 with
electricity and central heat. As the congregation grew in numbers, further renovations and additions in 1956 and 1960 were necessary. Additions included basement Sunday School rooms, nursery, second floor Sunday School rooms, an enlarged kitchen, and offices for pastor and secretary. The sanctuary was redesigned and the original tracker action pipe organ was also electrified. Later the organ and its façade were completely restored and dedicated in 1991. Most recently the kitchen and entrance off Home Street have been updated.

Community

The Reformed Church of Fort Plain has a long history of religious education, community engagement, and ministry. For over 270 years the church has served its congregation with regular Sunday worship services, women’s organizations, Bible studies, Sunday School classes, and various other programs. For many years the church was particularly noted for its annual Roast Beef Dinner, rummage sales, and its Easter and Christmas pageants. More recently the church was the headquarters for those working to restore the village after two devastating floods. Currently the church offers space for support groups for those dealing with mental illness and addiction. We operate an Emergency Food Pantry that is available 24/7 for those in need.
